On March 7, 2012, the iCSC in partnership with the British Embassy organized the conference Sustainable Transport in the Philippines: Strengthening Opportunities and Creating Partnerships for Electric Public Utility Vehicles, held at the Manila Polo Club.
The conference brought together leading representatives from the private sector and members of the transport sector, represented by a wide array of jeepney driver associations. Electric vehicle manufacturers, designers and policy analysts attended as well, including business groups keen on shifting commercial operations towards sustainable transport alternatives. Officials were also present, led by Sen. Ralph
Recto, who provided the brilliant framing of the electric vehicle industry’s directions by calling for the early passage of the Alternative Fuel Incentives Bill. Senator Recto was joined by mayors, governors and officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Two British experts on Low-Emission Vehicles or LEVs, Garret Emmerson, COO of Surface Transport (Transport for London), and Neil Butcher, Associate Director of Arup, delivered presentations on the LEV experience and challenges in the UK and provided inputs on measures that can be developed in the Philippines, sparking great interest amongst the participants.
