Puerto Princesa acquires another eJeepney
Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn recently announced the city’s acquisition from PhUV Inc. of another electric jeepney (eJeepney) for use in its Climate Friendly Cities Program. “The eJeepney fleet is the third and final component of our CFC Program, completing what we call the green circle. We take pride in the fact that Puerto Princesa is the very first city in Asia to complete the CFC green circle”, he says.
John Marasigan, sales manager of PhUV Inc., the local assembler of the eJeepney and the business arm of the Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (MVPMAP), says that Puerto Princesa officials were happy with the performance of a PhUV Inc. eJeepney they received as a donation last year from the British Embassy that they decided to invest in another one. “Mayor Hagedorn himself drove the second eJeepney from the city to Barangay Sta. Lourdes, the site of the sanitary landfill and biodigester facility. It was able to navigate not only the bumpy and rugged roads but also handled with ease the uphill climb as well”, he adds.
The PhUV Inc. eJeepney is the first electric vehicle ever granted a license plate by the LTO. Mr. Marasigan says that “since the eJeepney will be used extensively all over Puerto Princesa for the CFC Program, it is important that it can be registered and a license plate can be obtained. This is not going to be a problem with the PhUV Inc. eJeepneys”.
Puerto Princesa City has just broken ground last February 14 for the second component of its CFC Program -- a pioneering biodigester facility that can generate as much as one megawatt of electric power. This biodigester is fed with biodegradable household wastes from the city which is estimated to be 21 tons per day. Earlier, the city had already invested in the first component of the CFC Program -- a charging station cum depot for its fleet of electric vehicles. The zero-emission eJeepneys completes the three major components of the city’s CFC Program.
To complement the eJeepneys, the city is now eyeing the electric tricycles (eTrikes) and the four-wheeler electric quadricycles (eQuads) from PhUV Inc. to replace the gasoline-fueled polluting tricycles in the city as the next phase of the CFC Program.
The CFC Program is undertaken by the Institute of Climate and Sustainable Cities (iCSC) with funding from Nethrelands-based Doen Foundation. iCSC pioneered the implementation of the very first ever mass use of eJeepneys in the Makati Green Route Project. Under this project, twelve eJeepneys supplied by PhUV Inc. ferry passengers for free in its two routes, the Legazpi and Salcedo Village loops. Both routes start and end at the Landmark.
A third MGR loop will soon be introduced in the Rockwell District in Makati together with Makati’s own biodigester facility. The Rockwell eJeepney loop will start and end at EDSA corner Estrella and pass through the Rockwell Power Plant mall and some parts of the poblacion.
